About this kata

Ananku (安南空, "Light from the South" or "Peace from the South") is, in Okinawan terms, a relatively modern kata, composed by Kyan Chotoku — traditionally said to have been inspired by his trip to Taiwan in the early 1930s, though in form and movement it reads as thoroughly Okinawan, blending Shuri-te and Tomari-te elements.

Because it was created by Kyan himself, the presence of Ananku is one of the features that distinguishes the Kyan line of Shorin-ryu from other Shorin-ryu schools — it does not appear in Shotokan at all. In several Kyan-lineage systems it is the first advanced kata, and it shares many traits with Seisan, for which it prepares the student.
