About this kata
Chinto (鎮東, "Fighting to the East") is an advanced kata named, by legend, after a shipwrecked Chinese sailor whose fighting methods were studied by an Okinawan master. It is one of the treasures of the Kyan lineage.
The kata is highly dynamic, marked by the distinctive one-legged crane stance (sagi-ashi-dachi), rapid changes of height, unusual strikes, a rare one-footed pivot and a diagonal embusen traditionally performed facing east. It develops balance, timing and the generation of power from unstable positions. Known in Shotokan as Gankaku (岩鶴, "Crane on a Rock").
