About this kata
Gekisai Dai Ichi (撃砕第一, "Attack and Smash – First") is one of two introductory kata created by Chojun Miyagi (founder of Goju-ryu) in 1940, along with Gekisai Dai Ni. Miyagi developed the Gekisai pair specifically for physical education in Okinawan schools, aiming to create simple, accessible forms that would spread karate more widely.
The kata moves in four directions, covering basic stances (zenkutsu-dachi, heisoku-dachi), straight and augmented blocks, a front kick and lunge punch, and a hammer-fist strike (tetsui). It is typically the first kata taught to new students and establishes the foundational mechanics of Goju-ryu movement.
