About this kata
Gekisai Dai Ni (撃砕第二, "Attack and Smash – Second") is the second of the pair Chojun Miyagi composed in 1940. It builds directly on Gekisai Dai Ichi, introducing open-hand techniques (haito — ridge-hand strike, shuto — knife-hand block), a cat stance (neko-ashi-dachi), and a roundhouse kick (mawashi-geri), making it noticeably more complex than the first.
Together the Gekisai pair serve as the gateway to Goju-ryu, and many Goju-ryu schools now consider them the mandatory starting point before a student advances to the classical kaishu (open-hand) kata.
