About this kata

Kururunfa (久留頓破, "Holding Ground and Sudden Burst" or "Forever Stops, Peacefulness, and Tearing") is one of the most visually dramatic kata in the Goju-ryu system. It is characterised by extended slow-motion sequences (yukkuri) punctuated by explosive fast combinations — embodying the go-ju (hard-soft) principle at its most extreme.

The kata includes unique open-hand grabbing movements, sweeping leg attacks, and one-hand supported stances, reflecting advanced close-quarters grappling strategies. The slow sections develop awareness and the rapid bursts demand total control. Kururunfa is regarded as one of the technically most demanding forms in the system.
