About this kata
Kusanku (公相君) is a long, advanced kata named after a Chinese military envoy ("Kushanku" / Kosokun) who demonstrated his art in Okinawa in the 18th century. It is one of the most important and most demanding kata in Okinawan karate, and has given rise to many regional versions.
The Kyan-lineage form is the Yara no Kusanku, which Kyan learned in Yomitan under Yara Pechin. It is celebrated for its night-fighting theme, sweeping techniques and a low crouching sequence. Known in Shotokan as Kanku Dai (観空, "viewing the sky").
