About this kata

Passai (抜塞, commonly "to storm / penetrate a fortress") is an old and important Okinawan kata expressing the idea of breaking through a stronger opponent's defence by sheer determination and shifting power. It is built around dynamic changes of direction and the transition from disadvantage to control.

The Kyan-lineage version is the Oyadomari Passai (handed down from Oyadomari Kokan), regarded as one of the oldest surviving forms of the kata. Known in Shotokan as Bassai Dai (抜塞大), which derives from a different (Itosu) line.
