About this kata

Pinan Shodan (平安初段, "Peaceful Mind – First Level") is the first of the five Pinan kata created by Anko Itosu around 1905 for teaching karate in Okinawan schools. The Pinan series is thought to derive from the older, longer forms Kusanku and Channan.

Note on naming: Shorin-ryu retains the Okinawan name Pinan; Shotokan renamed these Heian. Funakoshi also reversed the first two, so Pinan Shodan corresponds to Shotokan's Heian Nidan — it is the more technically involved of the opening pair, featuring back-stance and shuto (knife-hand) techniques.
