About this kata
Seiyunchin (制引戦, "Control, Pull and Unbalance in Battle") is the longest of the lower-grade classical kata and one of the most distinctive in Goju-ryu. Unusually, it contains no kicks — the entire kata is performed with hand techniques and grappling-range bunkai, reflecting close-quarter combat principles.
Wide shiko-dachi (horse/sumo stance) and ne-ko-ashi-dachi (cat stance) combine with sweeping elbow strikes, hip throws, and pulling-and-striking sequences that express the "control and pull" of its name. The kata develops powerful hip rotation and a rooted, low base. It is typically taught at intermediate kyu grades and is considered a benchmark of a student's foundation.
