Tensho転掌

Revolving Palms

Also known as: Rokkishu (Chinese predecessor)

About this kata

Tensho (転掌, "Revolving Palms" or "Rotating Hands") was created by Chojun Miyagi himself as a complement to Sanchin, and together they represent the yin and yang of Goju-ryu — go (hard) and ju (soft). Miyagi based Tensho on the Rokkishu (Six Hands) he had encountered in China.

Where Sanchin demands total contraction and ibuki breath, Tensho is performed with relaxed, flowing open-hand circles, hooking palm techniques (shotei), and soft, natural breathing. The slow circular movements develop sensitivity, joint flexibility and the redirection of force. Miyagi regarded Tensho as the most important kata in Goju-ryu for developing ju (soft) qualities.
