Tokumine no Kun徳嶺の棍
The Bo of Tokumine / Tokumine's Staff

About this kata
Tokumine no Kun (徳嶺の棍, "The Bo of Tokumine") is an advanced Okinawan kobudo kata for the bo (six-foot staff). It is named after and attributed to Tokumine Pechin (c.1850–1910), widely regarded as the finest bojutsu exponent of his era on Okinawa.
According to tradition, Tokumine was exiled to the Yaeyama Islands, where he created this kata and passed it to a local village elder. The form survived and re-entered mainstream practice through Kyan Chotoku, a key figure in the development of Shorin-ryu and its related styles, from whom it was inherited by later teachers including Tatsuo Shimabuku.
The kata is characterised by:
- Dynamic, sweeping strikes and powerful thrusts (nuki)
- Rapid transitions and changes of direction
- A blend of long-range striking and close-quarter staff work
Tokumine no Kun is considered a senior bo form, demanding control, timing and fluid handling of the staff throughout.
