About this kata
Wansu (汪楫) is a short but technically demanding Tomari-te kata, traditionally traced to the Chinese envoy Wang Ji (Wanshu), who visited Okinawa in 1683. In the Kyan lineage it was passed to Kyan Chotoku by Maeda Chiku (Maeda Pechin) of Tomari.
It is characterised by simultaneous block-and-counter techniques and is best known for its signature kataguruma (fireman's-carry) throw — the "dumping" that gives the kata its nickname. Known in Shotokan as Empi (燕飛, "Flying Swallow"), a substantially reworked version.
